Revolutionizing Medical Practice with AI-Powered Personalized Training

Personalized Medical TrAIning (PerTRAIN)

Integrating State-of-the-Art Personalized Knowledge and Technologies into Medical Training

Research Focus

We envision a future where every medical professional is equipped to understand and connect with their patients on a truly individual level. One of the most impactful aspects of healthcare often lies in the social interactions between doctors and patients – how well symptoms are understood within the context of a patient's unique expressions, how effectively treatments are communicated considering diverse backgrounds and personalities, and how professionally feedback is incorporated.

Individuals differ in systematic ways in how they recognize others, act toward others, and reflect on others in social interactions. In the context of doctor-patient interactions, such personality differences of patients concern their motives, fears, communication styles and willingness to follow doctoral advice. Some describe pain in vivid detail, while others experiencing similar discomfort downplay it. Likewise, patients also differ in how they interact with doctors—some are friendly and open, others more nervous or reserved, and their way of requesting changes in treatment can range from very assertive to quite subtle. To fully understand a patient’s needs and give effective advice, doctors need to understand their patients’ personality.

At PerTRAIN, we create realistic personalization trainings using large language models (LLMs) that capture diverse personalities—shaping how symptoms are expressed, trust is established, and feedback is given. Virtual patients are placed in training scenarios of varying complexity, from simple text-based chats to simulated phone or video consultations and fully immersive AR/VR experiences. Clinicians learn to recognize personality cues and adjust their communication in real time, supported by targeted feedback and analytics that transform each training into measurable skill development.

PerTRAIN at the CDSC Kick-off Event

At the kickoff event of the Center for Data Science and Complexity (CDSC) at the University of Münster on February 9, 2026, PerTRAIN was presented to an interdisciplinary audience from across the university. The event featured inspiring talks, lively discussions, and many opportunities to connect with researchers from different fields. As part of the program, we presented a poster on our work and also invited participants to try out our prototype hands-on. The reactions to the more agentic and unfriendly LLM were particularly striking.

PerTRAIN at the Münster University Open Day

On November 13, 2025, the PerTRAIN project was successfully presented at the Münster University Open Day. Prospective students had the opportunity to put theoretical concepts directly into practice. They interacted with various AI-based personalities and reflected on their own communication behavior. A particular highlight was the real-time mapping of LLM responses onto the Interpersonal Circumplex scale. This provided participants with immediate feedback on whether their interactions elicited warm or cold, as well as dominant or submissive reactions.
